The Mitchell Residence

Calvin Straub of Buff, Straub & Hensman designed this house in 1959 for Jack Mitchell, an electrical engineer, and Ann Mitchell, a UCLA librarian. Ann found Straub through the Los Angeles Times Home magazine.

The post-and-beam house sits on a wooded one-acre lot in Rolling Hills Estates, on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. A split-level plan steps down to a sunken living room anchored by a full-height brick fireplace with a cantilevered mantel. Floor-to-ceiling glass and translucent screens line the dining room, family room and kitchen. The original built-ins and light fixtures remain. The house has had three owners since 1959.
