The Drake House
Paul Edward Tay designed the Drake House in 1950, one of his first commissions. Tay trained at USC, practiced in Long Beach for about 25 years and counted Harwell Hamilton Harris as his main influence.
The house sits in Bixby Knolls, Long Beach. A skylit entry foyer with a tiled fountain wall leads to an open living room with the original Roman brick fireplace. Tay's entry pergola survives. A later renovation by Interstices Architecture added a studio-gallery with clerestory windows and a three-panel glass pocket door to the pool.
